ON BEHALF OF THE UNIVERSITY OF HUDDERSFIELD, AHR REDEVELOPED THE 1960'S JOSEPH PRIESTLEY BUILDING TO PROVIDE MODERN, HIGHLY SERVICED TEACHING AND LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS FOR THE NEW FACULTY OF APPLIED SCIENCES.
THROUGH EXTENSIVE REMODELLING AND REFURBISHMENT, THE OUTDATED BLOCK HAS BEEN TRANSFORMED INTO AN EXCITING AND ATTRACTIVE SPACE THAT SUPPORTS THE UNIVERSITY'S BRAND AS A LEADING EDUCATION PROVIDER.
AHR’s design introduced a new atrium which completely redefines the circulation strategy and, through innovatively overcoming site level changes, creates a fully accessible and inclusive environment for all users. The atrium also provides new and much needed social and collaboration spaces at the heart of the faculty, and the access has also been transformed into a new welcoming entrance.
The building has been stripped back to its concrete structure which, as well as lending a contemporary aesthetic to the space, gives inherent thermal stability and reduced energy consumption. A new central staircase enables easy movement between floors and through restoring the building’s overall height, space has been created for new high specification and intensively serviced laboratory spaces.The interior design was informed by the services and structure of the building, using bio-molecular forms which reflect the science happening within. Natural daylight is maximised to promote wellbeing and accents of orange provide a simple and clear brand identity.
Externally AHR developed an innovative lightweight over cladding system, which allowed the day-to-day activities of the busy University to continue undisturbed.
The development is highly flexible and future proofs a critical part of the University’s estate for years to come.
